It’s rare that someone’s life comes as completely full circle as that of Matt Duran, GS ’20, who ended up at the same school where he nearly began his baseball career six years earlier.
Matt Duran doesn’t quite fit the profile. The New York-Penn League profile, that is. As the Staten Island Yankees played their 2012 home opener at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George last night, their brand-new roster was filled mostly with what you’ve come to expect: recent college stars playing their first pro ballgames after being selected in the June amateur draft; Latin players of roughly the same age a few years into their professional life; maybe a few free agent pickups, guys cut loose from other organizations, or the independent leagues.
The Yankees selected third baseman Matt Duran in the fourth round with the 149th pick in last week’s draft. Duran, a New Rochelle native and Fordham recruit, hit .580 (29-for-50) this year with 10 home runs, 41 RBIs, 36 runs scored, eight doubles and 31 walks.
Day two of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft got underway on Tuesday with Fordham recruit Matthew Duran (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) hearing his name called in the fourth round (Pick #149) by the New York Yankees.
